Albany County Land Bank Replaces Red “X” With Opportunity in West Hill

The Albany County Land Bank is pleased to announce the successful renovation of 257 Second Street, located in Albany’s West Hill neighborhood. To celebrate this occasion, we invited residents, local leaders, and community members to join us for a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 15th, 2025, at 10:00AM to remove the red “X” placard from 257 Second Street and replace it with a For Sale sign.

"The transformation of this once-vacant property into a quality homeownership opportunity represents exactly what we strive to accomplish,” said Albany County Land Bank Executive Director Sean Maguire. “By rehabilitating abandoned buildings and creating pathways to firsttime homeownership, we're not just revitalizing properties—we're strengthening neighborhoods and helping families build generational wealth. We're thrilled to bring this renovated home to market and invite interested first-time homebuyers to consider this affordable opportunity to put down roots in our community. This project exemplifies our commitment to addressing vacant properties while expanding access to safe, quality, and affordable housing throughout Albany County."

“The Albany County Land Bank Corporation is one of our most valuable tools for building stronger, healthier communities. We’re not just restoring buildings, we’re building hope, stability, and opportunity for residents. This site is an example of that,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy.

"Every time we remove a red 'X' from an abandoned building and repurpose it, we breathe life and hope into the Capital Region and neighborhoods that have been neglected for far too long here in Albany," said Senator Patricia Fahy (D—Albany). "Ensuring that first-time homebuyers have pathways to homeownership and revitalizing homes across our communities is exactly how we combat the housing crisis that continues to persist in the Capital Region and New York State. We must build more housing, and part of that is redeveloping our existing housing stock. Thank you to the Albany County Land Bank Corporation for investing in Albany's neighborhoods, the dream of homeownership for all of our residents., and for being a willing partner in our efforts to address the housing crisis."

Today’s ceremony is another affirmation of our collective commitment towards revitalizing, rejuvenating, and reinvigorating Albany County as a whole. Creating more housing, especially affordable housing, is part of a growing agenda for the Albany County Legislature. We will continue to work with the Albany County Land Bank as it transforms vacant spaces into thriving places.” Said Albany County Legislature Chairwoman Joanne Cunningham.

“As a proud supporter of efforts to increase the supply of affordable housing for Capital Region families, I’m thrilled to celebrate the transformation of 257 Second Street into a vibrant homeownership opportunity.” Said Congressman Paul Tonko (NY-20). This project stands as a great example of what we can achieve when we invest in our neighborhoods and work together to tackle the rising cost of housing. It’s the kind of effort we need to replicate across our region, our state, and our country to help more families achieve the dream of homeownership. I applaud the Albany County Land Bank for their continued leadership in revitalizing our communities and expanding access to safe, affordable homes.”
